A diminishing publishing industry

Ben Hart posted this article on Flavorwire today about the ongoing downward spiral of the previously recession-proof publishing industry.

There are certainly valid points: he points out that the publishing industry was thought to be doomed before, but proved to be resilient in the face of “television, the Internet, and the general public’s apathy toward reading”. However, he credits this staying-power to “huge successes like The Da Vinci Code and the Harry Potter series”.

I agree that the overwhelming response to books like these has given the publishing industry a leg up, but to completely credit them for the industry’s ability to hold its own in this increasingly technological age? I don’t know about that.
